Luis Buñuel’in üçüncü filmi Las Hurdes (Ekmeksiz Toprak) filmini çektiği günlerden bahseden film, 92. Akademi Ödülleri değerlendirmesi için İspanya’nın da aday adayı olmuştu. İlk uzun metrajlı filminden sonra iş bulamayan yönetmen, İspanya’nın Las Hurdes bölgesinde etnografik bir çalışma olacak bir belgesel çekme teklifi alır. Süreç sırasında seyirciye Buñuel’in dramatik etki için kullandığı kurgu sahneleri, kabusları ve La Alberca’nın yokluk koşulları gösteriliyor. Filmin sonunda filmin finansörü ve Buñuel’in yakın arkadaşı Ramon Acin ve eşinin İspanya’daki Milliyetçi darbeden sonra anarşist aktiviteleri sebebiyle infaz edildiği ortaya çıkıyor. O kadar ki yönetmen, filmi ancak Acin’in adını filmden çıkardıktan sonra İspanya’da gösterime koyabiliyor.
Talking about the days Luis Buñuel was shooting his third film Las Hurdes (Land Without Bread), the film was nominated to be considered for the 92nd Academy Awards. Unable to find new work after his first feature film, he is proposed to shoot a documentary film as an ethnographic study of the Las Hurdes region of Spain. During the process, the audience is presented with the staged scenes Buñuel used for dramatic effect, his own nightmares and the poverty-stricken conditions of La Alberca. At the end of the film, it is revealed that the financier of the film and Buñuel’s close friend Ramon Acin and his wife were later executed for their anarchist activity after the Nationalist coup in Spain. He was only able to release the film in Spain after removing Acin’s name.
