*My Stolen Planet begins with the images of women protesting the Islamic revolution’s obligation to wear hijab, on the year Farahnaz Sharifi was born. It ends with the demonstrations for the same cause in 2022, which escalated after the murder of Mahsa Jina Amini. Director Sharifi composed both a diary and a form of civil archive by collecting records from before the revolution. She uses 8mm footage of family celebrations from the counrty’s forgotten secular past, a time when everyone were freely dressed, feasted and drank, played music and danced without the fear of police raids, contrasting it with the current suppression. According to her, the public sphere in Iran was so different than her life at home that she describes it as another planet; as an adult, she reminds us of her own planet through the archives. This documentary, full of laughter and tears, premiered at the Berlinale Panorama.
