*A man is arrested, but he cannot learn why he was arrested and what is the nature of his crime. No film better illustrates the concept of the “Right to a Fair Trial” than The Trial, the theme of the Academic Program at the 14th International Crime and Punishment Film Festival. Orson Welles’ 1963 adaptation of Franz Kafka’s eponymous novel from 1924 is an ironical thriller transforming an individual’s despair before the authorities. Welles defined this classic as his “most autobiographical film” and it still remains very much up-to-date. Welles’ genius is supported by Edmond Richard’s cinematography in this black and white film which mesmerizes with its compositions inspired by famous paintings and architecture.
