*I Saw Three Black Lights depicts a metaphysical world within a harsh reality. The main character, Jose de los Santos, is a kind of pagan healer with a strong Christian faith, an anthropological paragon of a belief deriving from the African roots of the ancient slaves and the conservative Catholicism of the Spanish colonizers. Like his last name he symbolizes a saintly personality. Looking for the body of his murdered son, he knowingly risks his life going on a journey into the jungle —a place where material and spiritual worlds meet. The ruthless human beings are intruders, they continuously destroy other living things by fighting and mining. I Saw Three Black Lights demonstrates the threats and violence people in Colombia face every day. It’s a harrowing and unrelenting look at the constant fear and destruction they have to endure throughout the ongoing crisis plaguing the country.
