        Frida Mersin DOB

        Writer-Dramaturge: Füsun Ataman Berke

Frida Kahlo… The Mexican painter… The artist who had perhaps one of the greatest love affairs of the 20th century in her undulating marriage with the painter Diego Rivera, one of the exponents of the Mexican National Muralist Movement… The woman who could not bear a child to her husband, even though she desperately wanted to… A woman, whose life took a whole new turn by the paralysis she had during her childhood and the horrific tramway accident she had in her maidenhood; whose, at first, leg, then spine, hip, womb, and almost whole body would be hurt. She meets death for the first time when she was but a child… When she steps into her maidenhood, her prime, death knocks her door once again and constantly haunts her behind that door… Frida, clings to painting she had started with the dyes her father presented to her as though it was her redeemer. Thus, she becomes a heroine, who manages to dismiss the ever-present breathing of death, which stands by her side on each turn, clutches onto life.

It is not in vain that at her homeland she is called “la heroina del dolor”, the heroine of pain. The recasted image of the virgin Mary, referred to as Guadalupe in Mexico, believed to be the one that appeared to Saint Deigo… Just like in this story, one day she also appears to the heroic painter of Mexico, Diego Rivera, and meets the love of her life. Woefully, la heroina del dolor continues to walk on the shores of death, with the desire to give a child to her husband, the fruit of their love. Her pregnancies end in miscarriages. She can be thought of as the mortal who could dance with the god of death, who set sails into the infinity on the wings of painting, who had already surpassed her time, and went beyond the realm of pain…

Mersin State Opera and Ballet presents to you an artist who defies death, reflects her own reality onto the canvas, and therewith, moves beyond of the mortal-fated life of the human disposition, her dance with the death.
