        Giselle İDOB

        • Bale

In the 2023-24 art season, İstanbul State Opera and Ballet will stage "Giselle," a narrative derived from the Wilis Legend described in the great German poet Heinrich Heine's book "Germany." Accompanied by the music of French composer Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) and choreography by Jean Coralli-Jules Perrot-Marius Petipa, "Giselle" is a prominent work of romantic ballet. It encapsulates both the pastoral lifestyle and the extraordinary world, accentuating the grandeur of love and the indispensability of passion. The piece first premiered on June 28, 1841, at the Ballet du Théâtre de l’Académie Royale de Musique located in Salle Le Peletier, Paris.

"Giselle," laden with supernatural elements, unveils the tragic and romantic tale of a young, beautiful, yet shy village girl named Giselle, who adores dancing, and Count Albrecht. The Count, smitten by Giselle, introduces himself as a farmer named "Loys."

The ballet, set against the backdrop of love, disappointment, death, remorse, unattainability, and reunion, illuminates dramatic narratives like "impossible love" and "affluent man – impoverished girl." It also delves into fantastical, otherworldly events in the second act. The exquisite aesthetic language employed in both choreography and visual presentation elevates "Giselle" to one of the quintessential masterpieces of romantic ballet.

This year, İstanbul State Opera and Ballet reintroduces "Giselle" to its repertoire, with Zeynep Sunal Öngün orchestrating its staging.
