BİRİNCİ PERDE

19. yüzyıl, Rusya. Sonbahar, kırsalda. Larin malikanesinde. Madam Larina, evlenmeden

önceki günleri düşünmektedir; o zamanlar kocası tarafından ilgi görmesine rağmen

başka birini sevmiştir. Şimdi dul olan Madam Larina’nın iki kızı vardır: Tatyana ve Olga.

Tatyana, kendisini kahramanlarıyla özdeşleştirdiği romanları okumakla vakit geçirirken,

Olga’ya ise komşuları olan şair Lenski kur yapmaktadır. Lenski, beklenmedik bir şekilde

yeni bir misafir olan Yevgeni Onegin’i de yanında getirir ve Tatyana, Onegin’e âşık olur.

Tatyana, dadısı Filipyevna’dan ilk aşkı ve evliliği hakkında anlatmasını ister. Bütün gece

boyunca Onegin’e tutkulu bir mektup yazar ve sabah onu Filipyevna’nın torunu

aracılığıyla göndermesi için dadısını ikna eder.

Tatyana, bahçede Onegin’in cevabını bekler. Onegin, Tatyana’nın itirafından etkilendiğini

kabul eder, ancak bu duygulara karşılık veremeyeceğini ve sadece dostluk

sunabileceğini söyler. Başka bir erkeğin saflığından faydalanmaması için duygularına

hâkim olmasını öğütler.

ACT I

Russia, 19th century. Autumn, in the countryside — the Larin estate.
Madame Larina reflects on her youth before marriage. Though she was once courted by her late husband, her heart had belonged to another. Now widowed, she lives quietly with her two daughters, Tatyana and Olga.

Tatyana is a dreamy, introspective girl who loses herself in romantic novels, identifying with their heroines. Her younger sister Olga, lively and carefree, is being courted by their neighbor, the poet Lensky. One day, Lensky arrives with a guest — his friend Yevgeny Onegin. Tatyana is instantly captivated by the newcomer.

That night, unable to sleep, Tatyana asks her nurse, Filipyevna, to tell her about her own first love and marriage. Overcome with emotion, Tatyana pours out her feelings in a heartfelt letter to Onegin, which she convinces Filipyevna to send through her grandson the next morning.

In the garden, Tatyana waits anxiously for Onegin’s response. When he arrives, Onegin gently tells her that, though he is moved by her sincerity, he cannot return her love. He offers only friendship and advises her to restrain her emotions, warning that yielding to passion can lead to unhappiness.

İKİNCİ PERDE

Ocak ayı. Yerel halk, Tatyana’nın isim gününü kutlamak için Larin malikanesine davet

edilmiştir. Onegin, Lenski’nin davetini kabul ederek, küçük bir aile toplantısı olacağını

düşündüğü bu kutlamaya isteksizce katılır. Ancak büyük bir partiyle karşılaşınca canı

sıkılır ve Lenski’den intikam almak için Olga ile flört edip dans etmeye başlar. Lenski,

kıskançlığının zirvesine ulaşarak Onegin’i düelloya davet eder. Parti dağılır.

Düellodan önce Lenski, şiiri, Olga’ya olan sevgisi ve ölüm üzerine düşünür. Onegin’in

geç gelmesi ve seçtiği şahidi saygısızlık olarak görülür. Hem Lenski hem de Onegin

pişmanlık duymasına rağmen düelloyu durdurmazlar ve Lenski öldürülür.

ACT II

January. The townspeople have gathered at the Larin estate to celebrate Tatyana’s name day. Onegin reluctantly agrees to attend at Lensky’s invitation, expecting only a small family gathering. When he arrives to find a lively party instead, he quickly grows bored and irritated.

Out of mischief — and perhaps resentment toward Lensky — Onegin begins to flirt and dance with Olga. Lensky’s jealousy boils over, and in a fit of rage, he challenges Onegin to a duel. The party ends, and everyone leaves feeling uneasy.

Before the duel, Lensky reflects on love, poetry, and the fleeting nature of life. Onegin’s late arrival and the choice of his second are seen as acts of disrespect. Though both men feel regret and hesitation, pride prevails — and the duel ends with Lensky’s death.

ÜÇÜNCÜ PERDE

St. Petersburg. Düellodan sonra birkaç yıl boyunca yurt dışında dolaşan Onegin,

başkente geri döner. Bir baloda Prens Gremin, genç eşini tanıtır. Onegin, bu kadının

Tatyana olduğunu fark edince şaşkına döner ve ona âşık olduğunu anlar.

Onegin, Tatyana’ya bir mektup göndermiştir. Gremin sarayına gelerek ondan kendisiyle

kaçmasını ister. Tatyana hâlâ onu sevdiğini itiraf eder, ancak evliliği konusunda kararını

verdiğini ve kocasını terk etmeyeceğini söyler. Onegin umutsuzluk içinde kalır.

ACT III

St. Petersburg.

Years have passed since the duel, during which Onegin has wandered abroad, restless and disillusioned. Returning to the capital, he attends a grand ball hosted by Prince Gremin, who proudly introduces his young wife. To Onegin’s astonishment, she is none other than Tatyana. In that moment, he realizes that he now loves her deeply.

Onegin writes Tatyana a desperate letter, begging for a meeting. When he comes to Gremin’s palace, he implores her to run away with him. Tatyana admits that she still loves him, but says her decision is made — she is married, and she will not betray her husband. Onegin is left alone, overcome by despair.
