Synopsis
Summer 1979... Ester, a 23-year-old newly graduated teacher, moves to the town of Alta in northern Norway to start her career. Like many of the Saami, the native people of Scandinavia, Ester is ashamed of her heritage and conceals her ethnicity. Her cousin Mihkkal, on the contrary, openly embraces his roots and takes Ester to see the camp of a group demonstrating against the government's plan to build a hydroelectric power station. As she meets the people fighting to protect the river in this predominantly Sami region, Ester slowly realises that the conflict is about much more than environmental concerns; her people's identity and culture are under challenge.
