In 1937, a married couple arrive in the Slovak town of Svit in the Spiš Region. Alois, a factory manager, and Helena, an intelligent and skeptical woman who dropped out of medical school to start a family, are expecting a child. Alois' mission in this town is to build a new factory. But one day, the body of a newborn baby is found on the construction site of Alois's factory. The fact that this baby has both male and female genitalia causes outrage in the small and conservative community. Alois wants to cover this up as quickly as possible. But his wife Helena will not cover it up and will investigate the case.
