        Nâzım Hikmet'in 1948 yılı haziran ve ekim ayları arasında Bursa Cezaevi'nde yazdığı 'Ferhat ile Şirin' adlı oyunu, halk edebiyatında çeşitli biçimleri bulunan ve Orta Asya'dan Anadolu'ya kadar uzanan geniş bir coğrafyada bilinen, nesiller boyunca sevilen bir aşk öyküsüdür. Şirin'ine kavuşması için Demirdağ'ı delip pınar suyunu şehre akıtması şart koşulan Ferhad'ın mücadelesi, giderek toplumsal bir ülküye dönüşür. Nâzım Hikmet, bu destansı eserinde, insanın aşkı için mücadele etmesinin yanı sıra kahramanın vatana ve halka olan sevgisine de büyük önem vermiştir.
