In his new film, directed after a six-year hiatus, Mike Leigh explores the dynamics of a modern family struggling with hardship and in search of human contact. As poignant and heartfelt as it is tough, this drama follows various members of the Black family in London: Pansy, stubborn and ready to pick a fight with anyone over anything, her husband Curtley, who can't be bothered to stand up to her, and their grown-up son Moses and chirpy sister Chantal. This latest film by veteran director Mike Leigh, beloved for his naturalistic style that explores the complexities of human relationships in films such as Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), Another Year (2010) and Mr. Turner (2014), had its world premiere in Toronto in September.
