Bitter and Triumph is the story of Salvador Mallo, a veteran filmmaker whose youthful days are long gone, and the choices he has made and the events that have left their mark on his life. The film touches upon Mallo's childhood in the 60's, his and his mother's migration from their village to Valencia in the hope of a more comfortable life, his first love that made his heart race in Madrid in the 80's, his introduction to writing and cinema as a means of salvation and therapy, and the events that led him to know himself. Almodóvar's own life story in a way, Bitter and Triumph is at once sad and hopeful, with the emotions it conveys spilling out of the screen, thanks in part to the titanic performance of its lead actor Antonio Banderas.
