Jan is left paralyzed after an accident. His wife, who had been praying for his recovery, feels guilty. Furthermore, Jan is put under even greater strain when he insists that she have sex with someone else. Jan asks her to describe what she experienced while having sex with that other person. At first, this is a very unusual situation for Bess. However, she comes to believe that everything is the will of God, to whom she once prayed ceaselessly. A film by Lars von Trier that examines the concepts of love, sexuality, and God. Emily Watson won an Oscar for her role in this film.
