Jacques Mayol and Enzo Molinari are friends who have known each other since childhood. Both passionate about the ocean and diving, the young men are rivals in many fields.
Enzo, who lives in Sicily, has held the freediving record for 6 years but is unrivaled. He sends a message to Jacques, who lives in the Peruvian Andes, asking him to compete with him. Arriving in Sicily, Jacques easily defeats his friend. The rivalry grows over time and the two men descend to incredible depths, risking their lives.
Jacques' lover Johana arrives from New York and demands an end to this irrational war. The movie builds towards a dark, mysterious and unforgettable ending.
Featuring haunting submarine sequences, Big Blue is like director Luc Besson's baby with its Greek-Sicilian seascapes and 80s electronic music in the background. It is a masterpiece in every sense different from Nikita and Léon, the violent films that made Besson world famous. It tells a spiritual journey on the skeleton of a romantic comedy and accompanied by mind-blowing visuals.
