The new film, which won 12 awards including Best Director at Venice for Matteo Garrone, director of Gomorrah, Dogman and Pinocchio, tells the story of two young men who dream of seeing the world and becoming rap stars, and their efforts to go from Senegal to Europe. What they undertake is such a difficult journey that, just like a modern Odyssey, it extends from the relentless desert to torture-filled penal camps in Libya and from there to the vast open sea. At the award ceremony in Venice, Matteo Garrone handed the microphone to activist Kouassi Pli Adama Mamadou, the source of inspiration for the story; Mamadou dedicated the award to “those who cannot reach”. The script of the film, which is Italy's Oscar candidate, was created by interviewing immigrants who have endured this ordeal, and reflects what happened to them along the way, not after their arrival, from their perspective.
