Holy Spider
The Holy Spider, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, follows Said, a respected citizen and family man who has set himself the mission of “cleansing” the holy city of Mashhad of “immoral and dishonorable street women.” When a series of murders strikes terror into the city, a female journalist decides to investigate the case on her own. However, even as the horrific truths come to light, it becomes clear that the killer is viewed as a hero by many, and securing justice becomes increasingly difficult. Inspired by the true story of a serial killer who targeted sex workers in Mashhad in 2000 and his subsequent trial, Ali Abbasi critiques misogyny rooted in patriarchy, stating: “The dehumanization of certain groups, particularly women, is not a phenomenon unique to Iran; it is found in various forms all over the world.”*The Holy Spider* was announced as Denmark’s Oscar submission.
