Andrey Zvyagintsev, one of the master directors of contemporary Russian cinema, has been nominated as Russia's Oscar nominee. Unloved is about the experiences of Zhenya and Boris, who are on the eve of divorce, after the disappearance of their child Alyosha.

Zhenya and Boris are about to end their marriage, which has been consumed by boredom, hatred and mutual accusations. Long before they start divorce proceedings, someone enters their lives and they are eager to make a new start; until their 12-year-old son Alyosha, who overheard one of their arguments, disappears.
