BiographyFormed in 2010 in Houston, Texas, Khruangbin is a unique American trio that blends world music with psychedelic rock, soul, funk and dub sounds. The band's name means "airplane" in Thai, symbolizing the cross-cultural journey of their music. Featuring Laura Lee (bass guitar), Mark Speer (guitar) and Donald "DJ" Johnson (drums), Khruangbin has carved a unique niche in the music world with their boundary-crossing style.
Inspired by Thai phonk music on their debut album "The Universe Smiles Upon You" (2015), the band turned to Middle Eastern and Latin influences on "Con Todo el Mundo" (2018) and made a more vocal-oriented return with "Mordechai" (2020). Their latest album "A La Sala" (2024) presents a meditative, simple and emotional sound world.
The black wigs and simple stage designs they wear in their live performances are a unique visual signature. In this atmosphere where music is at the forefront, the audience is almost detached from the concept of time and space.
Khruangbin's songs are mostly instrumental and each one carries the spirit of a different geography. Iranian pop, Spanish melodies, Afrobeat and Asian melodies come together in this music. The band's "AirKhruang" playlists and DJ sets reflect this spirit of global exploration.
Nominated for the 2024 Grammy Awards for "Best New Artist", Khruangbin is now a name that attracts the attention of not only the alternative music scene but also the mainstream. With his concerts in Turkey, Khruangbin's universal melodies are now getting ready to meet local audiences.
