The Coast of Utopia, Arcadia, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, Rock 'N' Roll gibi tiyatro oyunları Brazil ve Shakespeare in Love gibi sinema filmleri ile tanınır.
The Coast of Utopia, The Real Thing, Travesties, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead gibi oyunlar ile En İyi Oyun dalında Tony ödülünü, Shakespeare in Love filmiyle En İyi Özgün Senaryo Oscarı'nı kazanmıştır. Venedik Film Festivali'nde verilen büyük ödül olan Altın Aslan'ı 1990 yılında Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead filmiyle kazanmıştır. Halen Londra Kütüphanesi başkanlığını yürütmektedir.
