In the ruins of what was once known as North America lives the nation of Panem. There are 12 districts around the capital, the Capitol. The Capitol is fierce and unforgiving, and the districts are lined up along a line. Each of them must participate in the annual Hunger Games. For the competition, each district has to send a boy and a girl, aged between 12 and 18. The Hunger Games is a fight to the death, broadcast live on TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen lives with her mother and 12-year-old sister. In the games she takes her sister's place and takes the death penalty upon herself. But Katniss has come close to death before and this is the second time she will fight for her sister's survival.She has become a contestant without really knowing what it means.If she wins this challenge, she will start the option of survival. Winning means fame and fortune. Losing means certain death.
