Synopsis:

Arménio, a veteran of the Portuguese colonial wars in Angola, meets Hermínia, an Angolan nurse, in the nursing home where he is forced to stay... The gruff, prejudiced and racist old man is haunted by horrific memories of the war. At the same time, he unexpectedly becomes dependent on his caring, compassionate and honest caregiver... In addition to delicately dealing with important themes such as colonialism, racism, regret and redemption, The Scent of Memories shows how fragile human beings become in old age. Among other qualities, the film's success is largely due to its actors, who paint intimate portraits. Jose Martins won the Best Actor award at the 2025 Shanghai Film Festival for his powerful performance.

Veteran Arménio, who served in Angola during the colonial wars of Portuguese, meets a caregiver from Angolan origin at the retirement home where he has to stay... The fearful memories emerge in the mind of this mean, prejudiced and racist old man. On the other hand he unexpectedly becomes attached to his loving, compassionate and honest caregiver... Beside delicately dealing with important themes of colonialism, racism, remorse and redemption this film explores the vulnerability of human beings in old age. The success of the movie mainly depends on the actors who depict intimate portraits besides its multiple merits.
