The Antique

THE SCALE OF JUSTICE

*Georgian, Russian; Turkish and English Subtitles

*In 2006, Georgia left the Russian Federation following the South Ossetia conflict and the arrest of Russian spies. In retaliation, Russia began deporting Georgian citizen, and the allegations of maltreatment ended in Russia’s conviction by the European Court of Human Rights. Georgia’s Oscar nomination Antique uses these events in the backdrop of a multifaceted story about unusual friendship, solidarity, love and business affairs. A free-spirited young Georgian woman and an old Russian man attached to his habits symbolize their cultures. Set in St.Petersburg which now carries its original name after being renamed Leningrad following the Soviet revolution, Antique portrays how people’s lives are turned upside down by historical context, while mitigating the gravity of the situation with humour.
