In this, his last film since 1997's Funny Games, Michael Haneke depicts the lives of a group of 'ordinary' people living in Paris. On a crowded boulevard, a man throws a crumpled piece of paper into the hands of a strange beggar. What is written on the paper somehow connects Amadou (Ona Lu Yenke), a teacher, Anne (Juliette Binoche), a movie actress, and Maria (Luminita Gheorghiu), a beggar, who are all living their own lives.
