All of A Sudden

One of those films that have found the most beautiful way to understand and convey life through cinema… Soudain, which earned its two lead actresses the Best Actress Award at Cannes, follows a woman striving to create more humane conditions at the nursing home for the elderly she runs in Paris, and a Japanese playwright whose illness has reached its final stages. The two women, who meet by chance, form a deep friendship through their shared insight into how compassion heals sensitive souls. Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, who has won a special place in our hearts with *Wheel of Fortune*, *There Is No Such Thing as Evil*, and *Drive My Car*, conveys to the audience—with a rare delicacy—both the closeness between the two women and the inevitable journey between life and death, weaving them together. The film was Japan’s Oscar submission.
