1960’lar İtalya’sında, ünlü yönetmen Luigi Comencini ve kızı Francesca arasında geçen, kalbinize dokunacak bir baba kız hikayesi. Kızına çok düşkün olan Luigi, yoğun çekimlerine rağmen kızına vakit ayırmaya çalışır. Ancak Francesca büyüdükçe, asi ve bohem bir hayata yönelir. Bir gün Francesca’nın sevgilisi trajik bir şekilde hayatını kaybettiğinde baba-kız dönemin çalkantılı politik atmosferini de göz önünde bulundurarak, Paris’e kaçmaya karar verir. Paris’te yaşanan zorluklar, Luigi’nin yaşlılığı ve hastalığı ile Francesca’nın iç çatışmalarını derinleştirir. Yıllar sonra Francesca, başarılı bir yönetmen olur ve babasının öğütleriyle başarıya ulaşır. Baba-kız bir film çekmek için son kez bir araya gelirler.

Un padre e sua figlia. Gli anni di piombo e la "generazione scomparsa". Un film autobiografico che sa di vita e di cinema. Un padre entra nel laboratorio di ceramica della figlia e la maestra gli consegna la statuetta di un cane. "L'ha fatto tutto la bambina?", chiede il padre, sorpreso dalla qualità del manufatto. Quel padre è il regista Luigi Comencini, e in quel suo dubbio è contenuta l'insicurezza con cui sua figlia Francesca farà i conti per tutta la vita, nel confronto con un genitore gigantesco per talento, fama e personalità. Un genitore che per lei ha avuto tempo, ascolto e attenzione, come l'ha sempre avuto (anche nel suo cinema) per tutti i bambini, ma nel cui cono d'ombra Francesca si è mossa a disagio, sempre preoccupata di "essere in campo' al momento sbagliato, contemporaneamente visibile e invisibile ai propri occhi e a quelli di quel padre ingombrante e venerato. Ci vorrà tanto tempo, e il passaggio (in ombra, appunto) attraverso alcuni anni difficili, perché padre e figlia trovino un rapporto meno sbilanciato e conflittuale, e perché Francesca diventi a tutti gli effetti "collega" di un artista che ha lasciato il segno nel cinema italiano.
 

This film is a very personal account of moments lived by the director with her father. A personal account, yet told with the proper distance, in that cinema is ever-present between father and daughter: as a passion, a life choice, and a way of being in the world. Cinema as a web that underlies the story of their exchanges and creates a space for imagination. Images are sparked by memories and like memories amplify a few notable markers while erasing others. Spare images, where there is hardly anything other than the two of them, and the marker that is present always has something monstrous about it: large things are exceptionally large; distant things are incredibly far; sunbeams are ablaze; nearby things are much too close. As for the movie sets, however, everything is in excess: confusion, urgency, people, noise—and everything here is also amplified. In these sets is the thrill of communal life. The ones featured in the film are those of Pinocchio, built in the middle of nowhere in the barren countryside.
