One of the cult classics of the documentary cinema, Grey Gardens (1976) captures on film the haunting relationship of Edith Bouvier, nearing 80 and her middle-aged daughter, Edith Bouvier Beale, who lived secluded in their decaying 28-room family mansion in East Hampton mansion. In this double portrait, they address the camera, talking over each other in an odd and combative manner, with what some saw as mental confusion. Since they may or may not be performing for the camera, the film captured and held the public’s attention for decades, raising questions about whether objectivity is possible in documentaries. Martin Scorsese describes Albert Maysles’s camera as “an inquisitive presence, but also a loving presence, an empathetic presence, tuned to the most sensitive emotional vibrations.”

Two of America’s foremost non-fiction director brothers, Albert and David Maysles are recognized as pioneers of “direct cinema.”. They made intensely talked-about films, including their cult classics “Gimme Shelter” (1970) and “Grey Gardens” (1975) with their American version of “cinémavérité” by keeping their observer status to their subject. They earned their distinguished reputations by being the first to make non-fiction feature films in which the drama of human life unfolds as is, without scripts, sets, or narration. Born to a Russian-Jewish immigrant family in Boston, they both studied psychology and started filmmaking in late 1950s. In 1962, they established Maysles Films. They made their landmark non-fiction feature film “Salesman” in 1968.AlbertMaysles, who shot all his own pictures, always worked as part of a collective, often shared the director’s credit with his soundman and co-producer brother, editors and another cameraman. David Maysles died in 1987, Albert Maysles died in 2015.
