*And So It Begins that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival is a multi-dimensional fragment from the democratic struggle in the Philippines. During the 2022 presidential elections, which saw the victory of Bongbong Marcos, the son of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos deceased in exile, director Ramona S. Diaz follows the campaign of the other candidate, lawyer Leni Robredo. Diaz chronicles the election process with an oppositional approach: She shows street demonstrations full of music and dance, interviews Robredo and the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize winner journalist Maria A. Ressa. She quotes from the website Ressa founded, www.rappler.com and displays the disinformation about the identity and regime of Ferdinand Marcos.
