Nagasaki, 1964. When his yakuza gang leader father dies, 14-year-old Kikuo is given up for adoption to a famous Kabuki actor. Together with the man's son Shunsuke, Kikuo begins to learn this traditional Japanese theater art. The two youngsters grow and develop over the decades, traveling together through scandals and triumphs, friendship and betrayal, from school to the most prestigious stages, as rivals and brothers. Kikuo will eventually become one of the greatest masters of Kabuki, a respected onnagata (male actor playing female characters). Based on the book of the same name by Shuischi Yoshida (meaning "national treasure"), this gripping, sumptuous, dazzling epic spanning a 50-year period had its world premiere at Cannes in the Directors' Fortnight section; it reached 10 million viewers in Japan, becoming one of the most watched films of all time and was nominated for an Oscar.
