Following the military coup of September 12, 1980, Turkey entered a difficult period overshadowed by repression and fear. During this period—when parliamentary rule came to an end, hundreds of thousands of people were detained, and torture and executions became part of daily life—leading figures in labor unions, civic organizations, and student movements were targeted.

While opposition leaders under surveillance by intelligence agencies sought dangerous and clandestine routes to flee the country, certain elements within the state turned a blind eye to a clandestine operation designed to trap them.
