Elisabeth Vogler, the most sought-after theater actress of her time and a woman of extraordinary beauty, suddenly falls silent during a major play. Though the stunned audience does everything in its power to understand what is happening, Vogler continues to remain silent. As a last resort, the woman is admitted to a clinic, where she remains mute. Since no medical issues can be found in her body, she is sent to a secluded summer house on the doctor’s advice. The person sent to accompany her is a young nurse named Alma. Even at the summer house, Vogler remains tight-lipped. As Vogler remains silent, Alma speaks. Alma spends hours, even days, telling her own story. What ultimately unfolds constitutes one of the most fascinating cases in the history of psychology.
