ABOUT
Autumn
Yusuf was released from prison 10 years after he was incarcerated in 1997—when he was a 22-year-old college student—due to health reasons. Upon his release, Yusuf was greeted in his village in the Eastern Black Sea region by only his elderly and ailing mother. While he was in prison, his father had died, and his sister had gotten married and moved to a big city. In this mountain village, where only the elderly remain due to economic hardship, Yusuf sees only his childhood friend Mikail. In the days when autumn was slowly giving way to winter, Yusuf meets Eka, a young and beautiful Georgian woman working as a prostitute, at a tavern he visits with Mikail. Neither the timing nor the circumstances are right for a relationship between these two people from such different worlds. Nevertheless, for Yusuf, love becomes a final attempt to cling to life and break free from his loneliness. For Eka, however, Yusuf is a character who is far removed from this world—one who doesn’t even live in the present—as if he had escaped from a Russian novel. Set against the backdrop of the post-1990s era, the film explores the irony, cruelty, and reality of that period, both documenting recent history and subjecting it to a critical lens.
