German soldiers are just outside Paris. Gerog sets out to deliver the belongings of a writer named Weidel and arrives in Marseille. But when he arrives in the city, he learns that Weidel committed suicide out of fear of torture. Now he is left with his belongings. They include a draft of a novel, some letters and a visa guarantee from the Mexican Embassy. Only those who can prove they are leaving can be found in a port city, and this is a potential entry permit. Georg assumes Weidel's identity due to the circumstances. While waiting for approval to leave the city, Georg establishes relationships with many refugees, but his plans change when he meets the mysterious Marie.
