Staged by Perdeci Players - Aysa Production Theatre, "Güneyli Bayan" is a slap in the face play that will impress the audience from the first moment!
Güneyli Bayan, the pressure exerted on art and intellectual life by the repressive McCarthy era in the 1950s and the war of Lillian Hellman, who did not submit to these pressures and admired herself with her strong stance in the period she lived in, are observed from a different perspective. The play, which transfers Lillian Hellman's inner experiences to the stage, conveys the political structure of that period and the effect of that political structure on people.
Set in the early 1950s, when harsh anti-communist winds were blowing in America and the fear of communism reached the stage of paranoia, Senator McCarthy interrogated and tried many intellectuals and artists on grounds such as anti-Americanism, communism and spying for Soviet Russia, the play depicts the defence of Lillian Hellman, considered one of the touchstones of American literature, before this committee for questioning, and represents the stance of the intellectual. Güneyli Bayan tells in a shocking language how those who consider themselves "intellectuals" turn into intellectuals of the order when it comes to their comforts, and how a woman struggles with this society without giving up her truth. Hellman, who does not choose to conform to the order and shows the courage of free expression, presents all the back rooms of the oppression created by the regime during the period she lived in. The play, which tells the story of her struggle with art and politics restricted by the repression created by the McCarthy gang in the 1950s, her reflection on her inner world and her resistance, holds a mirror to the intellectuals of today's country and the world.
One of the portraits of intellectuals brought to the stage by Bilgesu Erenus, the southern lady in the persona of Lillian Hellman is the voice of honourable intellectuals and artists who stand against dictatorship and fascism all over the world. The play, which will impress the audience from the first moment, is dramaturged by Taner Barlas, starring the master actors Rutkay Aziz and Dolunay Soysert with their magnificent performances, the set design by Yücel Tanyeri, costume design by Sadık Kızılağaç, poster design by Dilek Seferoğlu, poster photograph by Mehmet Turgut, lighting design by Mahmut Özdemir. Taner Barlas, Levend Yılmaz and Andaç Sayın are the voice actors and Andaç Sayın is the assistant director.
