Karen, a poor servant girl, loves to dance. But her bad shoes and the lady she looks after do not allow her to dance and have fun. One day a wicked beggar comes to town and tricks Karen into wearing the magic red shoes. Now, thanks to the red shoes and the magic button, Karen is under the control of the evil beggar. The beggar kidnaps Karen from the town where she lives and starts to earn money on her back by making her dance. Thanks to Jemmo, the beggar's good-hearted clown, Nels, the cobbler's apprentice, the mayor of the town and Karen's grandmother, Karen gets rid of the red shoes and the beggar. At the end of the play, everyone is happy except the evil beggar...
