Emma Thompson
Thompson, Paddington, Londra'da The Magic Roundabout isimli radyo programının sunucu olarak tanınan babası Eric Thompson ve İskoç aktris Phyllida Law'ın ilk çocuğu olarak dünyaya geldi. Kendisi gibi aktris olan bir de kızkardeşi vardır. (Sophie Thompson)
Thompson, Camden School for Girls isimli bir okula gitti. Daha sonra Cambridge'de Newnham College'da İngilizce edebiyat okudu. Aynı zamanda Footlights isimli bir komedi klübünün başkanı idi. Burada daha sonraları ünlenecek olan Hugh Laurie ile tanıştı ve bir süre flört ettiler. Eğitimini tamamladıktan sonra Robert Lindsay ile birlikte West End tiyatrosunda Me and My Girl isimli müzikalde ve Fortunes of War isimli BBC dizisinde rol aldı.
